project description
As part of the Christiana Care Hospital’s Wilmington campus expansion, RAS designed a courtyard garden in the area that was the hospital’s original vehicular drop off area. The garden design created a sense of tranquility and relaxation, but also as a place for healing. Patients at the hospital’s Center for Rehabilitation use the garden to help regain skills lost to brain injury. The garden has different types of surfaces, along with steps and ramps that provide an environment in which therapists can work with patients who are learning to walk with assistive devices or regaining their mobility when recovering from surgery or an injury. The various types of paving materials in the garden represent surfaces the patients will have to navigate after they leave the hospital.
