project description
In 2006 New Castle County’s Woodlawn Library moved to its new home at the site of a former Department of Motor Vehicle center. The non-profit group Friends of the Woodlawn Library engaged RAS to develop an interactive outdoor environment that promotes literacy and learning through play. Working in collaboration with environmental consultants, RAS developed the grounds as a showcase for stormwater best management practices. Features include a rain garden and a sculptural cistern to harvest and reuse storm water from the building’s roof. The sculptural cistern takes the form of oversized children’s alphabet blocks, with raised graphics illustrating water themes.
