Funded by a commitment from the Powder Mill Foundation, the Appell Horticulture Center was built to accommodate the new and growing Environmental Horticulture program at York College of Pennsylvania, which was first available to students beginning in Fall 2021. With a focus on environmental sustainability, the Appell Environmental Horticulture program also offers hands-on learning opportunities at Millbourne, Appell’s 50-acre private estate in York.
The landscape surrounding this newest campus building is designed to showcase a plant collection for learning, featuring native and non-native, resilient pollinator plants. The rich perennial composition is a first for York College and provides seating spaces for student leisure or study breaks. A dramatic sculpture commissioned by local artist Patrick Sells anchors the view of the front entrance.
